Sockets Not Working but Lights Still Work Causes & What to Do

If your sockets are not working but the lights still work, the problem is likely affecting the socket circuit, its protective device, connected equipment or part of the wiring rather than the whole electrical supply. The most useful clue is how many sockets have stopped working. One faulty socket presents a different situation from several sockets or every socket in the house losing power.

Working lights are reassuring, but they do not prove that the socket circuit is healthy.

“Why is there still electricity in the house?”

It is:

“Which sockets have lost power, and what happened before they stopped working?”

The number and location of affected sockets can give useful clues about where an electrician should begin investigating. It cannot confirm the cause by itself, but it can separate a local accessory problem from a wider socket-circuit fault.

What Are the Common Causes of Sockets Losing Power?

Sockets can lose power because a protective device has operated, connected equipment has caused a fault, or something within the socket circuit has failed. The correct repair depends on identifying which condition is actually present.

A circuit breaker has tripped

An MCB protects a final circuit against overcurrent and short-circuit faults. If the breaker protecting the socket circuit operates, it disconnects that circuit while separately supplied lighting may continue working. An RCD or RCBO has operated

RCDs provide additional protection against residual current, while RCBOs combine residual-current and overcurrent protection.

Consumer units can be arranged so that one RCD protects a group of circuits rather than the entire installation. This means some parts of the property may continue working when the device operates.

A faulty appliance

A faulty appliance connected to the socket circuit can cause a breaker, RCD or RCBO to operate.

If the same appliance is involved every time the sockets lose power, stop using it until the cause has been established.

An overload causes the breaker to operate

What If the Sockets Aren’t Working but Nothing Has Tripped?

Sockets can lose power even when no MCB, RCD or RCBO appears to have operated. A loose connection, damaged socket, broken conductor or another open-circuit fault can interrupt supply without necessarily causing a protective device to trip.

This is an important distinction because:

nothing visibly tripped does not mean nothing is wrong.

If several sockets have failed together, the problem may be further upstream than the socket where you first noticed it.

If only one socket has failed, the fault may be more local to that accessory or its connection.

A socket that is not powering an appliance should also not be assumed to be electrically isolated or safe to dismantle.

Professional testing may be required to establish where the electrical path has been interrupted and whether the problem affects the accessory, connection, conductor or another part of the circuit.

What If Only One Socket Has Stopped Working?

If one socket has failed while other sockets nearby still work, a local problem with that socket, its connection or the equipment being used becomes more likely. Checking the appliance first can help separate an appliance problem from a socket problem.

Try the appliance in another known working socket if it is safe and practical to do so.

If the appliance works normally elsewhere, the original socket needs further attention.

Do not continue using a socket that:

  • feels unusually warm;
  • has scorch marks;
  • smells of burning;
  • buzzes or crackles;
  • is cracked or loose;
  • or shows other visible damage.

What If All the Plug Sockets Have Stopped Working?

If all or many sockets have stopped working while the lights remain available, the problem is more likely to involve the socket circuit or the protection supplying it than one individual wall socket.

The arrangement inside the consumer unit becomes more relevant when a larger group of sockets has failed.

Look at the consumer unit only from its normal user-accessible position.

Check whether a clearly labelled breaker, RCD or RCBO appears to have operated. Do not remove covers or access wiring inside the consumer unit.

If a protective device has tripped, the IET advises that connected appliances can be unplugged before a limited reset attempt. If the device will not remain reset with equipment disconnected, a registered electrical contractor should investigate the installation. 

Repeatedly forcing the device back on is not a solution.

What Can You Safely Check Before Calling an Electrician?

You can safely identify the fault pattern, check your appliances and look at the normal controls on the consumer unit without dismantling electrical equipment.

Useful checks include:

  • Is it one socket, several sockets or all sockets?

  • remove socket fronts;
  • open the consumer unit;
  • touch internal wiring;
  • use a multimeter on fixed wiring;
  • attempt continuity testing;
  • attempt insulation-resistance testing;
  • or replace electrical accessories without the required competence.
